Councilwoman Kristin Richardson Jordan Announces Endorsement Of Shana Harmongoff For State Senate
On March 16th, in front of the Harriet Tubman Memorial, New York native Shana Harmongoff announced her candidacy for District 32 State Senate. Harmongoff is challenging Cordell Cleare, who was appointed and not elected to the State Senate. District 9’s Councilwoman, Kristin Richardson Jordan was eager to declare her support for Harmongoff. Community Organizer Ali Diini ran for State Senate shortly before dropping out due to fundraising issues and is now supporting Harmongoff. Councilwoman Richardson Jordan, who previously supported Dinni, followed suit to support Harmongoff’s candidacy. Also in attendance announcing their support for Shana Harmongoff was author Linda Bonnano, who celebrated Harmongoff’s efforts in getting healthcare for women in the community.
Shana Harmongoff is well known in the community, having served as District Office Director and Director Community Affairs in the New York State Senate under now Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin. Harmongoff later started a Senior Steering Committee. As a child, Harmongoff volunteered at nursing homes and seniors centers. At the announcement, Harmongoff stated “I’m truly grateful and blessed that my parents showed us at an early age what it looked like to serve the community and to be of service. I knew at an early age I wanted to do more, and I wanted to do something legislatively.”
During the pandemic Harmongoff provided a platform for healthcare professionals, parents and business owners through a virtual panel discussion dubbed A Covid Conversation. Harmongoff’s platform focuses on Mental Health and Wellness, Affordable Housing, Preventing Homelessness, Criminal Justice System Reform and Funding for Quality Education. During the announcement, Councilwoman Richardson Jordan declared “We need Grassroots candidates. We need change that is from the people. Make no mistake, the last few elections for this seat have been by appointment, and when people get into office through the machine, their service is to the machine. One of the things that I’m excited about with Shana’s campaign is because it’s grassroots, and it’s going to be by the people, and it’s going to be a democratic election, we will then get to serve the people together.” Harmongoff expressed her delight with the Councilwoman’s endorsement, stating “I love Kristin because she has a heart for the community, and I have a heart for the community. We want to make sure as legislators that we do what is right by the community. I have no doubt that she will as a new Councilwoman and I have no doubt that I will as the State Senator.
The primary election will be held on June 28th, 2022.
